STEADY RUN FOR POINTS AT SANDOWN
CRAIG LOWNDES and co-driver Steve Richards had a steady run from the back of the field to finish 13th in the Sandown 500.
After qualifying race dramas left them starting from the back in the opening race of the 2015 V8 Supercar Enduro Cup, Lowndes and Richards played a patient and strategic game to maximise the points haul.
“We got ourselves halfway up the field today, so I have to be happy with that,” a philosophical Craig Lowndes said.
“We just lacked car pace and really, the team did a great job and got us up there on strategy, that mid-race call to get us out of synch with everyone else was a great call.
“In fresh air the car was quick but in traffic it wasn’t so great, and that’s the story of our day.”
- Craig a conservative 23rd in 1st session for main drivers
- Co-driver Steve Richards 12th fastest in 2nd session
- Steve Richards 7th fastest in 3rd session
“Practice one was a little bit disappointing to be honest. We knew our tyre quality wasn’t going to be that good and the track surface was still a little dirty. During the session we made some adjustments and that improved the car over the session. Our fastest lap time improved but so did everyone else. In saying that, the car wasn’t ugly to drive…we managed to make it faster and Richo built on that over his two practice sessions.”
- Craig qualifies 16th for Qualifying race 1 (co-driver race)
- Steve Richards finishes 12th in Qualifying race 1
- Craig finishes 23rd in Qualifying race 2 after a drive-thru penalty for contact
“We’ve definitely improved the car (over the course of the day), it was nicer to drive and had more speed. I made a mistake into Dandenong Road corner when my tyre locked and ran into Jack Perkins, and copped a drive-thru (penalty) which was fair. Towards the end (of the race) we showed good pace, which was encouraging.
“I think tomorrow is all about circulating for the first half of the race and staying out of trouble to see where we end up. We need speed at the end of the day to be able to fight at the front.”
- Co-driver Steve Richards starts the race
- Steady & strategic run all day ends with a 13th finish
“We got a good points haul (today) and made the best of it, hopefully we’ll be strong at Bathurst and strengthen our chances for the championship.”
